Evidence policy

We separate measured performance from plausible advice.

Sound transmission is assembly- and frequency-dependent. We do not convert a laboratory rating into a guaranteed in-room result.

Measured evidence versus bounded inference

A standards test report or manufacturer declaration tied to a specific assembly is measured evidence: it describes what was tested, not what your room will do. A general building-science principle applied to a situation that was not itself tested is bounded inference: useful, and stated as such, but never presented with the certainty of a measurement. We preserve that distinction in the evidence record behind each recommendation and in the limits stated in its guidance. A diagnosis confidence label describes how well the interpretation fits the answers provided; it is not a measurement of acoustic performance.

Evidence hierarchy

  1. Standards, laboratory test reports and manufacturer declarations tied to a specific assembly.
  2. Building-science/acoustics guidance from identifiable specialists.
  3. Field observations and user reports, clearly labelled as anecdotal.

Editorial workflow

Each recommendation goes through the same steps: define the specific question a user actually has, find authoritative sources for it, constrain the claim to only what those sources support, document what remains uncertain or out of scope, review the result before publishing, and update or correct it if better evidence or a reported error arrives later.

Commercial sources and conflicts of interest

A manufacturer's own test report can be used as evidence for what was tested, but is treated as a manufacturer declaration rather than independent measurement, and is never the sole basis for a claim where independent standards or specialist guidance exists. The site currently carries no advertising or affiliate relationships; if that changes, it will be disclosed and will not lower the evidence bar a claim has to meet.

Claims we avoid

“Soundproof,” universal percentage reductions, and exact decibel improvements without a comparable tested assembly and measurement context.
